Phantom Series
Of all the books by Orson Scott Card, "born on Earth" is probably my least favorite. Not that the novel is not well written - is - or that it lacks a good story - it does not. But his role as the fifth and final book in a series makes you feel like a final incomplete.
Unlike the rest of the novels in the series Homecoming ", born on Earth" lacks most of the characters who have come to identify. The original cast, we have only Shedemai, the Oversoul, and the Guardian of Earth. I never understood why Shedemai had to sit in a warehouse for generations, watching over the Earth repopulated, and this book does not seem to explain. Although his ultimate dream of the Keeper fits well in this novel, that does not work in the series, why not Nafai or silhouette (or Shedemai) only have the dream of sending a probe back to the Basilica and do with it?
Similarly, the true understanding of the Keeper is very weak. Of course, prepares us for this card God when he made a computer program in the first four novels. The god of the humans in the Basilica of embargo have prayed for many millions of years ago ended being a computer program. But wait! We have learned in the books he had sent another message, insisting that human body is called the man back to Earth. Now, I agree with "Yes, it really is an" argument for God - which is one of the advantages of being a Christian - but after weakening their case simply did not have Card rack made a strong case in the other direction to such a being. And again, do not understand why this profound statement fell in book four - ground breaking nothing happened in "born on Earth" to provoke him.
Well, well, history. We have a lovely version of Alma, son, the style of science fiction. With the first four novels, I appreciated the card brought people so he was familiar with life and made me say, "Oh, so how could reason out of all miracles! "The same happens here." Oh, "I nodded," That's how the four children of a king and son of a priest could running amok. "Card offers the realistic characters, with an excellent motivation for their actions.
A review I read said it is ironic that the five "bad" boys produced a separation of church and state, and asked if maybe the card advocated a government-sponsored religion. Since the fact that the Mormon card is probably the reason like me in that aspect - that the Church stronger in faith we could not have existed in a land that religion forced, and that the founding fathers were inspired by the creation of the United States with the freedoms that allowed our church to be installed - I do not think that is the case. I urge readers, then, to look at the circumstances that led to this separation. He arrived when the king had to decide whether or not to apply the death penalty to someone who did not accept the doctrine of the monarch. It came after officers were priests as a result could not perpetuate evil to others not to believe the same. Remember, thirteen years before Alba and his friends attacked the church, the king proclaimed: "From now on, priests are no longer servants of the king, appointed by the king, and keep the king to carry out the great public rituals. "The final separation, then, was a natural result of this self-induced division. And so I think the card is not saying that the bad guys were wrong to want a separation, but, although they looked down the works of the Guardian, was completed on part of the plan of the Keeper.
I think this novel would have worked better as a separate book, separate from the Homecoming Series. It fits into the series as a whole, apart from satisfying the curiosity of people who ask, "What happened with your children?" It's a great story, but as one conclusion that I just dragged out.
