For a short time each year, the Canadian city away from Churchill, Manitoba becomes the polar bear capital of the world. This curious place, accessible by air, sea or rail, with its long main street, low rise buildings and feel clearly a pioneer, becomes the focus for bears and visitors.

In October and November, up to 1,200 bears gather here on the icy tundra, waiting for the sea to freeze so they can wander in search of seals. After fasting during the summer, bears are very hungry. Churchill is perched on a spit of land between the west coast of Hudson Bay and Churchill River, and for centuries, this peninsula has been the access point Natural bears at bay.
Polar bears have the ability to detect the scent from as far as 20 miles. Churchill is irresistible, especially if the big freeze is taking some time to happen. The great advantage of seeing polar bears in Churchill is that his adventure comfortable. Instead of camping in a field of ice with an arctic wind howling through its store, after you've spent a day with the bears that simply returning to civilization, eating a hearty meal made at home and then sleep in a comfortable hotel bed.
Temperatures can vary from less than ten degrees to nine degrees and although it is likely that snow and possibly rain, there is also a good chance of having bright, clear day to wear sunglasses. The particularly dark night and lack of artificial lighting outside the city, you can get to witness a display of northern lights.
Churchill occupies a transition zone where the stunted trees of the taiga meet mosses in the tundra.
