Popper Lure

In the early mid 90s, before I had any idea of becoming a guide striped bass or striped bass professional fisherman, used to achieve these brutes face busting exclusively at night with artificial lures. My all time favorite lure of choice was the Rebel 6 "Spatula minnow. My favorite colors blue with silver edges, a black back and yellow background. Another of my favorite lures for night fishing for stripers was the Cotton Cordell Redfin.

I usually started night fishing for stripers on my favorite lakes here in Virginia around the first week of March. The fish in this time of year begin to move up in the shallow areas, the streams and along the flats to feed aggressively at night on bait. During March he would take a great amount of fish just before dark on the right with the bite moving later and later in the night as the season progressed to spawn in May. You can always tell if hungry stripers fed in an area at night for the story would say it crashed on the surface when it involves a bait. I would put into question with Rebel sound along the shore in the dark and use a slow recovery dying to attract these large fish strikes that were very cautious in the shallow water. You would have real lure extremely slow, barely moving. The bomb attacks that come without warning, sometimes right on the boat. This is very exciting action and anyone who likes to striper fish must try.

During a fishing trip on Lake Virginia Smith Mountain, which had left a friend's house Lake boat under 20 feet of my Winner at around 12 AM The time of year was in May and went by the lake at Cedar Key Cove where the stripers are currently gathered to spawn in large quantities. When I went to "The" Keys and Cove Creek in The Witcher was called, I shut off the motor before reaching the mouth of the creek and listened. I was in deep waters and banks here fell away sharply. As I listened to the night The Tell Tale here could explode in some very large fish, to my right. Apparently, he had moved into the spawning alwifes were turning up along the rugged shores. The fish were enhaling right against the banks as they were in the spawning frenzy

I slowly moved my electric trolling motor and positioned the nose of the boat toward the shore, allowing me to deliver My Rebel parallel to the bank, close up, and slowly pull back the back. The food was fast and furious and I was on tenterhooks, expecting a blow to attack at any moment. After 45 minutes of repeated melting and many color changes, no fish and I was confused. The alwifes continued to spawn, making sounds turning against the bank, and continued to fly on them stripers. I tried to rebel in various colors and redfins good as, but no luck. As I was digging through my tackle box in my desperation, recovered a tangle of lures and I noticed a sound coming from the tangle that resembled the sound would alwifes when spawning in the area.

As I untangled the mass of hooks and baits I have found in a Redfin I forgot. It was a black and silver backed articulated model faces. I tied it and tested it on the side of the boat. As I slowly pulled on the surface I noticed a sound like it alwifes spawning on the shore. I repositioned the boat and fired a cast along the shore. About 4 cranks in the slow recovery was not a monstrous blow to the bait and I was in the first of many fish that the boat in the next hour. It was a wonderful evening and I caught many fish over 20 pounds and pushing thirty.

I stayed in the area until the action disappeared and at this point I I was tired, so I set out on the boat and the rest my eyes for a while. I awoke to the sound of fish last minute and chasing bait on the surface. It was right on the day and the stripers extends to the surface all around my boat. I picked up my rod and cast Redfin amid the frenzy. The stripers blowing in plug and kick it out of the water, but could not get a hook into one. The fish went down and gave me the opportunity to change lures a large popping plug I had. A few minutes later came back and threw the popper in between them. In the second Chug popper wrapped fish bait 20 pounds and had another fight on my hands. Fish down before I boarded and released this fish. It was over and would not return. What had been a very good night and morning and headed for the dock.

Whenever you are among the fish and can not bite them. Try different techniques and lures. Sometimes you make small changes, such as color or sound or even recover the velocity can be the difference between getting skunked and have a career journey.
