Fly Fishing

Using a long leader with a line of dry fly fishing is an effective strategy for most rainbow trout iris in the Kamloops area lakes, especially when fishing a worm or chironomids flight pattern. It took a long time for me to develop patience and willingness to use a longer leader, but when I did my most successful immense. For most fishermen in the river or novice fly-wheel, more of a leader feet 9 seems quite long but not on long leaders 18'-22 'we use here in the lakes trophy.

Many of the lakes in the Kamloops area as as Pass, Morgan, White, Peter Hope, Plateau, Knouff, Community, Sheridan and the island has very clear water allows light to penetrate to the level of 20'depth and more. This allows allows photosynthesis to take place, even at 20 feet, promoting growth of vegetation and thus the production of water insects, particularly worms and chironomids. It is in these depths that this food supply persists and evolves until they are ready to move up in the water column to emerge as an adult flying. Even if no chironomids rising to the surface, the fish feed on them still in or near the bottom.

There are two main challenges to be overcome to be successful in fishing a dry line with a long leader in 20 feet of water ...

Cast and patience.

Casting of a leader so long especially if a breeze can be frustrating at first, but practice will help you graduated along. I recommend taking a few sessions to learn casting long leader, perhaps from 12 'and increasing the length by about 2 feet at a time until you feel comfortable with the leader of 20'. Yes, you will receive tangles and wind knots, but it is all part of the learning process. When retrieving, bring your line as close as possible to the return before the recast because it will have much more control in creating the mold. In the list again, one has to ensure that the line and the leader of tipping back far enough before starting the forward motion of casting.

One technique that worked for me was becoming so that I threw across my body instead of pointing my body to where I was casting. So I could see the backcast and the time the forward motion more efficiently with the transfer leader. It is also recommended to position yourself in the breeze on the back or a little to your side. Allows the front cast to exhibit much easier.

The second obstacle is to have the patience to wait for the march to reach the total depth of the leader. Blood worms and chironomids in particular, have very little lateral movement rather than what a gentle stream can provide. It is important that this action mimics as closely as possible. Casting and wait 5-10 minutes, while the fly reaches the bottom it is not uncommon before starting the slow recovery.

Another trick to help the efficiency of casting and waiting time is to use a heavy fly and add further weight to the company leader in the form of small split shot very similar to a dropper fly, but without progress. (In British Columbia the use of a dropper is forbidden ... but you can when fishing with two lines for yourself ... go figure.) Weight added assists the casting motion and movement until the desired depth more quickly. If you need add splitshot, add from the tippet knot first (about 6'above 4'-fly). Add more shots if needed but not too much as it does not their line of a weapon of self-harming oneself during a dirty deal.

Unless you can find a strike indicator that can be opened or easily separated, I would not recommend that you use to fish deeper than about 14, if you are on a boat, or no more than is 10'if in a float tube or pontoon boat. It can be a complicated exercise to free the indicators and land the fish at the same time. You lose more fish that way.

As mentioned above, chironomids and have little lateral movement bloodworms which to retrieve a fish very slowly. Many times these trophy rainbow trout even drop hit her dead. Not hurt to try dragging through these imitations marl, removing the bottom ever so lightly, attracting cruise background.

I have caught many large fish using this strategy and find it particularly effective during the summer doldrums, when the trout are deep during the day and in the spring before the water begins to warm and the insects have begun to migrate to the surface yet.

Give it a try. I am sure that a little practice and patience you too will be catching more fish with a long leader and a dry line.
