Fall Rare

The giraffe looked at me, his big brown eyes as calm as the night of the savanna. Our eyes met: I was wondering why he was so quiet in a place where lions and leopards lurk. He was intrigued by this person pale with a short neck and only two legs.

"The giraffes are my favorite," our guide said softly. He told the peaceful giraffe, "I teach people to behave as he does?"

Murchison National Park Falls is a wild place where you can be eye-to-face with a giraffe, a lion full competition and close enough to a crocodile to count his pointy teeth. In Murchison, safaris are personal matters, does not fill the competitions for the next big game animal. The park has recovered from the devastating poaching suffered during the reign of Idi Amin.

Elephants in large herds now roam without fear, their big ears flapping, not far from the safari vehicle occasionally.

A Man, once model commissioned us to protect her baby, who was just saying that was his territory, not ours. Lions are said to number around 2005 and we have seen in 60 giraffes in a herd. Kob is the same grace with another game, and oribi (antelope), hippos, leopards, bushbuck, Hartebeest, waterbuck, with aspect of buffalo. The population of the park is alive and well.

Murchison Falls is a six-hour drive northwest of Kampala, but with the roads full of potholes and dust that can last up to eight hours. The drive takes you through Budungo Reserve, where olive baboons sit on the road, as if it prepares you for Murchison, an oasis of the wild, where animals are closely and permanently in office.

Afternoon bonded with the giraffe, the sun was setting behind a hill, Murchison highlighting signature palms and acacias. Elephants brought the seeds of the incongruous palms from Sudan and deposited here, another ranger told us. Now the palms stand alone in a sea of grass, yellow or green, depending on the season, creating a strange and beautiful landscape.

The Nile River cataracts
The park gets its name from where the mighty Nile river narrows and collapses through a gap 23 feet wide in its northward journey from Egypt. We took the popular boat trip at the foot of Murchison Falls to see hundreds of hippos and sneezing harrumph in and out of the water, crocodiles and dozens of pilgrims with their agape mouths. We drifted in close to see three baby crocodiles in the back of his mother.

Nearby was the place where Ernest Hemingway small plane crashed in 1954 during the American author's African safari. he, his wife and the pilot, were not seriously injured, were picked up by a boat very similar to ours.

At times, the Nile is possibly also for your comfort living.

Since we went downstream, the boat engine stalled, and resulting in the reeds. I was thrilled to be like Katharine Hepburn in the classic film "African Queen" (some scenes were filmed near Murchison), but the other passengers were less fun.

After spending an hour watching for aggressive hippos and mosquitoes, the engine sputtered and soared on, unharmed except perhaps by the sun of Uganda.

On our safaris the rare shoebill, a prehistoric stork seems more likely seen in Murchison than elsewhere, escapes us, like leopards - Until our last trip.

Somehow that made sense in this place that belongs to the wildlife, not the lines safari vehicles. If you want to look at a leopard's eyes, like the giraffe, he will. If not, well, good for him.
