Landlocked Arctic charr, also known as blue-backed trout, silver trout, trout and white Sunapee trout, listed as one of the two species of freshwater of concern by the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. These beautiful fish are rarely seen far south in the warmer waters and as a result of Maine and Alaska are the only regions in the U.S. which has a native population of arctic char.
Landlocked charr prefer colder weather, with an abundant supply of oxygen, so it pays dividends to do a little research before you leave your fishing trip. Only about 20 lakes in Maine coastline containing charr, half of these have been stored artificially to promote both the reproduction of the species and to provide an extra special catch more fishermen determined. During the spring and fall, you can usually find landlocked charr in the lake, but during the summer months, fish are confined to the months colder, deeper parts of the lake.
Popular places to fish for landlocked Arctic char from Maine include Moosehead Lake, the western branch of Penobscot River and Rainbow Lake. Dona't be surprised if he expected to do some trekking a number of lakes in Maine, being the home of charr are inaccessible by road.
Your best method of capturing land-locked Arctic char will depend on what time of year is fishing. During spring and autumn colder when the trout are found throughout the lake, fly fishing and trolling with lures on the surface can bring fantastic prizes. Successful when the fish move more deep during the summer months, much more can be found using more lures or jigs.
Following the near extinction of landlocked Arctic charr in the region, comes as little surprise that so few lakes and rivers still contain the species. However, through careful planning and the protection of the authorities, the population of landlocked Arctic char is stable, enabling hundreds of fishermen around the country the rare chance to land these beautiful fish.
