Lure Walleye

Every spring, I can hold my fishing arsenal walleye with Crankbaits. The silver, green, that appear a rainbow and some that look, well, my idea of an alien creature from outer space. I know that during the months of April and May I will find my fishing Valhalla around one of the many shallow reefs in the Western Lake Erie Basin.

Shallow, irregular, rocky reefs provide an excellent opportunity to pray for Crankbaits fishing diving. I've been using for years with much success, to catch Walleyes are beating up on the reef in search of insects, crayfish and shiners. Forget the idea that you will not have any success in the bright sunlight, ignore people who say that the sky must be covered with gray Crankbaits, forget that nonsense. Any day is a good day to check.

Last May, on a beautiful sunny day, I nosed the bow of Mega bites around the island and headed Mouse west with my charter group. The first stop was in the waters around the "D" can, so called because there is a yellow buoy that marks the northern limit of the Most of the Camp Perry firing range. He has been productive the day before.

We had a light west wind, and water was fairly clear at 26 feet deep. We fished there all morning and the 11 hours we had about half of our limit of 42 Walleyes. Then, the stock closed as it normally does when the day. We were stuck in fish and worm harnesses weight forward decoys. After a short time I moved offline most of the areas southwest around shallow reefs Toussaint and Cuna. As I moved into the shallow water became increasingly evident to the point that when the probe shone 10-feet could see the bottom structure.

That's when I shut the engine off and let the boat drift. I rigged around the world with Crankbaits dive mixing to determine the best shapes and colors. In the first 15 minutes of casting and retrieval of us do not take a single fish. But now we were in six feet of water, so I went and closed the reef at 17 feet on the west side of the reef. As Mega bites drifted into shallow water was our first pike connect. Then another and another. I repeated this drift and 1:30 pm we were finished and ready to go home.

Meanwhile, the other boats which remained around "D" were beginning to experience an afternoon bite. I knew most of them were there for two hours before reaching its limit. I love that feeling when I limit early. Most of the time that will alert other captains with whom I work when I'm in fish. However, on this day I did not because he knew that more boats on the reefs that have scared the fish and thus spoiled the day for my group.

Coincidentally, another pattern cranks limited Reef Round about two miles away.

The type of Crankbaits I look for are those with big lips (divers) that will take up to 12 feet or less. I really can not recommend a particular brand, but look for the shad and Carpita imitators. Now some of these lures cost more than $ 4, but Wal-Mart sells its own brand for $ 2. Flea markets often have special offers, too. Where you buy it from you.

Cranks are fairly easy to master. I always try to get the lure as far away from the boat as possible. Once you begin a slow retrieve the lure diving. Recover faster and go deeper. But there becomes a point where, in their effort to get to the bottom, the recovery is too fast and that usually means no fish. Keep the boat is deep enough to appeal to bump along the bottom in an easy to retrieve.

As with all types of fishing, there is always time for experimentation. As an example, launch the lure into the wind, but not to initiate a recovery. Let the line until the temptation is well away from the boat adrift. You will find that deep diving lure with a slow crank and stay in the area strike more.

I hate to add weight, but sometimes necessary. When I do I use large split shot about 36 inches ahead of the attraction. Add a shot at a time. Too much weight is usually a rock and lost that appeal to $ 4 is not good.

One of the additional benefits of the use of cranks is that other fish are also attracted. I'm talking about smallmouth bass hoarse. When fishing around the structure rocky, especially in Lake Erie, you can be sure that smallie been mistaken for Walleyes. It's an exciting experience when it closes under four pounds Crankbait and breaks the surface of crystalline waters.
