This little known gem of a film is an unflinching, poignant portrait of a real incident that happened in Japan in 1988, where a young mother left her four minor children alone in a Tokyo apartment close for an extended period. These children, born of different fathers, I had never been to school, had to fend for themselves and survive.

inin the first shot, we see that the older child, Akira ride the subway with a suitcase between his legs. Then he cuts the mother moving into a new apartment with Akira and two big suitcases. Once the packers leave, the first suitcase is opened and obtained a adorable 5 years old, Yuki. Next to leave is 7 years old monster Shige panting. Shigeru then runs off to the railway station to get your sister, Kyoko. His first question was about the washer. During dinner, he gave a set of rules, no yelling, no loud noises, not going out, even the gallery. And as they moved into a new house for the umpteenth time promises a new and better life of his mother.

But soon, she gets a new boyfriend who is "sweet and serious'. She tells Akira that is the real deal this time ... and disappears, leaving Akira type, a small envelope of cash. She reappears once more, long after the money has been spent, with gifts for children on the same day will be packed and again promising to return for Christmas.

The days turn into weeks turn into months, weeks ... living conditions bearable range from decent to horrible.

Even in this dangerous situation, children manage to find tapes of joy in planting seeds into empty cups of noodles in a bath at the tap in a park in scribbles and waste time in making what kids do. (At the risk of rambling, in this sense his situation brings to mind the story of Apu and Durga, of Satyajit Ray's Pather Panchali, learning to make their own toys and find your own little treasures.)

While older children understand Akira and Kyoko, Yuki and Shigeru maintain hope for return of their mother.

The mother plays a pop star Japanese is not portrayed as a monster without feelings, insensitive father. She herself is a woman-child who can not jump from one misstep to another in his life, dragging their children along.

Akira is played for 12 years, Yuya Yagira a powerful and unobtrusive performance. He won the best actor in this Cannes'04 paper.

Himself is only a child ... about making friends ... but fails miserably ... the expression on his face when he gets to play a real game ball with other children eloquent expression of repressed desires to live a normal life, be a kid for once.

In this film, the director Hirokazu Kore-eda has made a version less bleak for the actual events. And the sensitive underestimate the absolute refusal to sensationalize the story is transformed into something unique narrative-a story existential delicate and touching.
